Chinese export porcelain sparrow beak creamer, circa 1790.
Condition: Small chip near end of spout; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
Dimensions: Approximately 5” tall.
Decoration:
The rim is bordered with a solid blue band, below which is a narrow chain with tiny floral sprays.
The front of body is decorated with an image of a black and gray covered urn with flowers and topped by what appears to be a dove.
The handle is of intertwined straps with molded flowers at the body.
There is a blue and gold husk chain surrounding the base.
The bottom is unmarked.
While not conclusively intended for the American market, urn designs were a very popular motif in American culture of the late 18th and early 19th century. These became particularly prominent features in ceramics and needlework after the death of George Washington in 1799.
The image of the dove was a symbol of everlasting life, and its image was often combined with that of the urn in the mourning iconography of this period.
