Chinese export fish and crab dish SOLD
Chinese export saucer with fish and crab pattern, late 19th century
Out of stock
Chinese export saucer for the European market, made in the late 19th century. It has a 4-character Kangxi mark but was made in the period today known as Kangxi revival. The saucer is finely potted and leightweight and has an impressed decoration around the foot rim. Surely one of the higher quality export items. The pattern shows four different fish around a crab. According to the book “Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art” mackerel, whitefish, carp and freshwater perch convey the wish “May you be pure and incorruptible” – a deeper sense that was probably lost on the 19th century European buyer.
Cups and saucers with this design are shown in Yeo: Chinese Blue and White Ceramics, p. 282-3
The diameter of the saucer is 13,3 cm or 5 1/4 inch. It is about 2,5 cm/1 inch high. Very good condition without chips, hairlines or restorations. The only flaw I found when taking the pictures is a tiny, almost invisible flea bite that might well be a production fault. The plate stand is not included in the price.
Provenance: Dutch collection
